Eighth Grade TEKS

Helpful instructions:

*Rules for integers

*Pythagorean Theorem

Adding:
Like signs – add and keep the sign         Examples:          8 + 4 = 12

                                                                                      -8 + (-4) = -12
Unlike signs – Subtract the two values and give the answer the sign of the number that is further away from zero.

Examples:         - 8 + 4 = -4           8 + (-4) = 4         4 + (-8) = -4         -4 + 8 = 4

Subtracting:
Add the opposite (actually change the subtraction symbol to addition and change the sign
of the number you were going to subtract).  Now use the rules for addition (see above).  If
it is regular subtraction you do not have to change anything.
Examples:             -8 – 4 = -8 + (-4) = -12          - 8 – (-4) = -8 + 4 = -4

                             8 – 4 = 4(normal subtraction)
                            4 – 8 = 4 + (-8) = -4               -4 – (-8) = -4 + 8 = 4
Multiplying:
Like signs – always positive          Examples:         8 x 4 = 32        -8 x (-4) = 32
Unlike signs – always negative      Examples:         -8 x 4 = -32      8 x (-4) = -32

Dividing:  same rule as multiplying
Like signs – always positive              Examples:           8/4 = 2          -8/(-4) = 2
Unlike signs – always negative          Examples:           -8/4 = -2         8/(-4) = -2
